The first time I heard Messi talk I could not believe my ears.
La primera vez que escuché a Messi hablar casi me caigo para atrás.
Sabía que había llegado a Barcelona muy de niño y pensé que hablaría como todo un culé, pero de su boca sale el castellano de los que no han dejado de patear las calles de Rosario, Argentina.
I knew he had moved to Barcelona as a child and I expected him to speak Spanish with a heavy Catalonian accent. But if you don´t know the story you could swear, by hearing him speak, Messi never left his hometown of Rosario, Argentina. He sounds soooo Argentinian. His social media accounts, particularly Instagram, show his passions. His son, his wife. There are also lots of images of him drinking mate, grilling the asado – BBQ Argentinan style, and lots and lots of albiceleste, the white and light blue of the Argentinan flag.
Su cuentas en las redes sociales revelan sus pasiones: Su familia, su mujer, su hijo, pero también hay mate, asado a la argentina y mucho, pero mucho albiceleste. Quisiera que sus padres me contaran cómo han hecho para producir un fenómeno de la categoría de Leo Messi. Cómo, aun en la distancia, lograron proteger y alimentar el amor por su país, cuidarle su identidad como argentino, tanto que hasta el acento le perdura. Es un desafío que tenemos todos los que criamos hijos fuera de nuestra tierra natal. Eso, sin rechazar lo nuevo. El amor de Messi por Barcelona es palpable. También se le sale de los poros. Él es bicultural, pero también es un ciudadano del mundo.
I wish his parents would tell me the formula to raise a world star who while loving Spain and Barcelona –you can just feel that — also has intact his identity as an Argentinian. This is one of the steepest challenges for somebody raising children in a foreign country. He is 100% multicultural, a true citizen of the world. However, while I do admire and wish this for my kids, what I really want them to learn from Messi is his generosity and team spirit. To see him play against Paraguay, in the semi-final match of Copa América 2015, was a better lesson for my children than any talk or lecture that me or their dad could have given them. Messi was the architect of almost all of the six goals Argentina scored against Paraguay. He could have scored at least one himself, but La Pulga offered his genius to his team mates. He created the opportunities that allowed the whole team to shine.
Pero aunque admiro esto y deseo lograrlo con mis hijos, lo que de verdad quiero que aprendan de Messi es su generosidad y espíritu deportivo. Verlo en el partido de la semifinal de la Copa América de 2015 —Argentina vs. Paraguay-– fue una lección que les sirvió más a mis chicos que cualquier sermón que yo o su papá les hayamos podido dar. De los seis goles que Argentina anotó, cinco fueron generados por Messi, más de uno pudo haber salido de sus pies, pero La Pulga dedicó su genio ha hacer quedar bien a sus compañeros, a crear las oportunidades para que todos brillaran.
Así quiero a mis hijos, hombres seguros de sí mismos, que saben que si el equipo gana, ellos también ganan.
I dream my kids will grow up to be men so self assured that they thrive on the knowledge that if the team win, they win. And of course, multicultural and if they can be first of their field and become millonaires doing what they love, well, you won´t hear me complaining either…
Claro, si también son 100% multiculturales, los mejores de su campo y se vuelven millonarios haciendo lo que aman, pues tampoco es que voy a protestar.
