This year, like every year before, a couple of weeks before the first day of school, my kids and I started our routine. I woke them up half an hour early every day, so the awful start at 6.30 am of the alarm wouldn’t feel like torture, we bought basic school supplies (in Middle and High School they don’t get the list until classes have started), and checked out their closet to see what new clothing they needed.

Pensé que todo sería igual que siempre, hasta que el de 14 años decidió que necesitaba un corte de pelo (lo llevaba por los hombros hasta ese momento) y que necesitaba comenzar a cuidarse la piel. Casi me desmayo, hasta entonces no le había prestado atención a cómo lucía. Todo lo contrario. “Se me hizo grande mi niño”, pensé.

Somehow, I thought that having a boy would make the stage of pimples, black heads and other delights that the hormonal changes of adolescence bring to the skin a non-issue, but I was wrong. Boys care as much as girls about how other people, particularly their peers, see them. If anything, it may be even harder for boys, because society tells them that they are not supposed to care. If you have a teen, ask them how they feel about their skin. I wish I had done it before.
Confieso que caí en el estereotipo de pensar que a los varones no les afecta tener granitos, puntos negros y otras de esas delicias que lanza la adolescencia a la piel, pero estaba totalmente equivocada. Los chicos se preocupan tanto como las chicas sobre lo que los otros, en especial sus compañeros, piensan de ellos y de su apariencia. Es más, me atrevería a decir que para los nuestros varones latinos es hasta peor, porque la sociedad les dice que está malo cuidarse la piel y se lo tragan. Si tienes un adolescente, habla con ellos sobre cómo se sienten respecto a su piel. Yo hubiese deseado hacerlo antes.
