Júpiter es un sitio precioso y, aunque no vimos ni gases, ni ninguna mancha roja, sí nos sentimos en otro planeta, aunque no estábamos lejos de casa.
Jupiter is a gorgeous place and, although he didn’t see any gases or a red stain, it did feel like another planet. Although we weren’t that far from home.
Para los que creen que Florida es Miami y los parques de Orlando, hay un tesorito esperándoles justamente en el medio del trayecto. Se trata de la ciudad (más bien pueblo grande) de Júpiter, que se puede visitar en un día y ofrece tanto lo histórico, lo playero y hasta un poco de lo ridículo que hay por estos lares.
Many people only think of Miami and the Orlando theme parks when talking about Florida, but the town of Jupiter is a little gem waiting for them just of the I-95 in the middle of the journey. It’s an amazing place for a day trip and there is plenty opportunity to enjoy the gorgeous beaches, learn a little bit of South Florida history, and laugh about some local flavor.

The city is in what used to be Hobe territory, the native American tribe that used to live by the Loxahatchee river. The story says that a Spanish map drawer confused Hobe with ‘Jove’, the Latin word for the Roman god Jupiter.

The most famous place of the town is the Jupiter Lighthouse, built in 1860. It’s made with bricks, but it was painted red in 1910, because the bricks were losing their color due to humidity. In 2004, huricanne Jeanne ruined the paint and was painted again using a special pain. The faro is often used as the symbol of Jupiter.
Visitarlo es un placer y una experiencia genial si se tienen niños. Mis hijos la pasaron muy bien trepándose por los 125 escalones que nos llevaron a la cúpula y aprendieron un poco de la historia deFlorida y de lo buena que es la vida hoy en día. En especial cuando visitamos la cercana casa, del estilo cracker, de George Washington Tindall y su esposa Mary Victoria Pilcher Tindall, construida en 1892 y considerada una de las más antiguas del condado de Palm Beach. Está hermosamente preservada.
Visiting the lighthouse is an amazing experience, particularly with children. Mine had a great time claiming the 125 steps that took us to the top and learn a little about the history of Florida and how easy they have it nowadays. Particularly when we visited the house built in 1892 by George Washington Tindall and his wife Mary Victoria Pilcher Tindall.

There are not many historical places in South Florida, which makes Jupiter even more special, although ironically the American public knows the town mainly for being the place where the Burt Reynolds y Sally Field movie Smokey and the Bandit was filmed. Reynolds was the owner of the house were the movie was filmed and helped so much the image of the town, that even has a museum and a park in his honor.
Pero como en toda la costa del sur de Florida, el mayor atractivo para los locales y visitantes es la costa. Los atardeceres son hermosos y las playas encantadoras.
But, like in all the South Florida coast, the main attraction for the locals and tourists is the coast. The sunset are spectacular and the beaches are glorious.
Además, hay tiendas sofisticadas y restaurantes de primera categoría. Disfrutamos mucho nuestra visita y sin duda vamos a volver. Tú deberías hacerlo también. Ya sea de paso hacia algún lugar, o para descubrir un sitio diferente. De verdad va a valer la pena.
Jupiter also has sophisticated stores and first class restaurants. We really loved our visit and plan to go back soon and you should visit too. Whether in the way to something else, or to discover a new spot. It’s really worth it.
